The holidays will be here before you know it, and all over the New England area, people are getting their homes ready for the festivities that we all look forward to this time of year. While you’re decking the halls and making your landscaping bright, Medford Wellington Services would like to remind you to give your plumbing some TLC as well! Without proper maintenance, it’s very easy for small plumbing problems to turn into large, costly disasters, a fate that becomes even worse during the cold winter months!

Cold Weather Makes Plumbing Problems More Complicated

There’s never really a convenient time to deal with plumbing problems, but they’re particularly troublesome in winter. When it’s cold, the ground could be frozen and it’s much harder to access areas in basements and crawl spaces where plumbing connections tend to be located.

Medford Wellington Services has been providing professional plumbing repair services to residential and commercial customers across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire for many years. Our experienced techs can perform repairs and installations in any type of weather, but we’d rather save you money by keeping your plumbing well maintained in the first place!

Keep reading to learn some of our favorite tips to get your plumbing system ready for winter.

  1. Protect Against Freezing
Do you remember learning about what happens to water in freezing temperatures when you were in school? It expands! When temperatures head to the single digits during the winter, it creates a prime situation for bursting pipes. This is why we recommend wrapping your uninsulated pipes in foam tubes that can easily be purchased at a hardware store. It’s like covering them in a warm winter blanket!
  2. Repair Leaks
If you’re aware of a dripping faucet or leaking pipe, the time to fix it is NOW. Not sure if you have a leak or how to repair it? Contact our plumbing experts for a comprehensive inspection.
  3. Drain Your Water Heater
The middle of January isn’t a great time to be taking cold showers. Make sure your water heater is cleared of all tank sediment and rust by draining it. If you’re not sure how to do that or would rather just replace your old water heater with a new one, contact Medford Wellington Services for maintenance or installation.
  4. Disconnect Your Hoses
Don’t leave your garden hoses or sprinklers attached to the faucet during the winter. Doing so can destroy your hose as well as your plumbing when the water inside freezes.
  5. Close Shut-Off Valves
While you’re putting away your hoses, be sure to check for any interior shut off valves that lead to outdoor faucets. They should all be closed and drained in order to prevent freezing damage.
  6. Clean Your Sump Pump Pit
If you have a basement sump pump to help protect your home against flooding, it’s important to inspect the pit before cold weather hits. When exposed to extreme cold, your pump can freeze, causing it to stop working. “If your sump pump malfunctions, water can enter your basement and cause flooding, especially when winter rains are in full swing. Do yourself a favor and inspect your pump and pit now to avoid massive flood damage and cleanup bills later,” suggests Angie’s List.
